The astronauts gathered, but it was bad news.
'The rocket won't be manned by one of you

This mission is too dangerous for the human race
We have decided to send a dog into space'

Applications poured in from different countries
From retrievers and pugs and a mixed up monkey

Then there was Mutt, a stargazing stray
Who hadn't much food, and just 1 friend, Ray.

Over hearing the news, Ray gave Mutt a nod
Declaring aloud, 'You're the dog for the job'

The competition was on, which dog would succeed?
But we all know mutts are the smartest breed.

Then the day of the flight, spectators for blocks
But Mutt and Ray chose to go for a walk

Mutt wanted time away from the glitter
With the one that believed he was pick of the litter

The countdown was on 4-3-2-1
Mutt blasted off past the moon and the sun

Nasa was awed by Mutt's extensive space lingo
and he remembered to keep his head inside the window

Mutt's landing was perfect, as was his parking
But a familiar sound now, could that be…barking?

This is 4 small steps for me, but a giant leap for dogkind
Because on this new planet, there are only canines!

The other dogs too, had come from space ships
Sent by other life forms, afraid of the trip

Every dog has his day, Mutt had twenty three
Hiking the new planet and playing frisbee

And at night all the dogs cuddled up to their mates
To listen to tales of Mutt's life in the states

'Sorry space brothers, but my stay must now end
Let me tell one last story, of this dog's best friend

Mutt didn't want a tearful goodbye,
He took off that night, letting sleeping dogs lie

Ray welcomed back his world famous hound
Not too shabby for a Mutt from the pound
