We drank together that very first time.
At your sister's wedding, we snuck some wine.

Then our first beer, at the age of fourteen.
It tasted awful and you nearly turned green.

But we swore we loved it, gulping down some more.
Drinking veterans but the time we were sophomores.

Our high school days went buy like a flash...
classes, girls and getting smashed.

Then off to that college, you were quite a sight...
You seized your new freedom, getting drunk every night

But you did learn a few pretty good lessons...
Like how to funnel a beer in under five seconds.

Letters on your chest, mug in you hand,
College graduated to the world a new man.

You took a job in the city and put on a suit.
And upgraded your vodka to Absolut.

A wife, a kid, a house in the burbs...
Your belt expanding from cocktails and hors d'oeuvres

Years passed us by and I saw you much less.
And now they call me with the news of your death.

And this is strange old pal, but when I try to rethink…
I can't picture you without holding a drink.

I go back to that wedding, when wine first touched your lip.
And ponder your life had you not taken a sip...
Less social maybe, less unique I don't know.
Did alcohol impair you to the status quo?

Anyway friend, I'll now say goodbye.
See you at Happy Hour up in the sky.
